A 100 year-old Brazilian man has received the Guinness World Record for the longest career

What's the shortest time you've spent in a job? Mine was a short-lived stint at IKEA that barely lasted over a month...

There's one man who would be sorely disappointed with me for that performance. Earlier this year, Walter Orthmann was certified as having the longest career with the same company in the world - hitting a new milestone of 84 years.

Back in 1938, Walter started work as a shipping assistant when he was fifteen years old at a textile company in Santa Catarina, Brazil, called Industrias Renaux S.A. (now known as Reneaux View).

Shortly after, Walter was promoted to a position in sales. Then he found himself succeeding as a sales manager, setting himself up for a very happy and long tenure with the same company.

Walter says that he believes that the best part about having a job is that it gives you a sense of purpose, commitment and a routine.

The best professional advice, in Walter's own words, are to try to work for a good company and in an area where you feel motivated.

He said, "I don’t do much planning, nor care much about tomorrow. All I care about is that tomorrow will be another day in which I will wake up, get up, exercise and go to work; you need to get busy with the present, not the past or the future. Here and now is what counts. So, let’s go to work!"
